True Romance is one of those large films that was rather unfairly and bizarrely largely ignored on it’s current theatrical release but it’s really hard to know why. It’s not because of the script/screenplay, that was written by the ample Quentin Tarantino, with all the trademark flourishes you’d seek information from, with witty dialogue and tall set-pieces that leave you quoting them for weeks. It’s not because it’s got a bad cast or bad acting. Apart from the leads, Christian Slater and the incredible Patricia Arquette (in undoubtedly their greatest mask performances), this movie has a cast list like a whose who of colossal veil actors; Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman and Christopher Walken. It also boasts a sizable cameo performance from Brad Pitt and a profitable supporting performance from (the then not so renowned) James Gandolfino. Val Kilmer and Samuel L. Jackson even turn up too in blink and you’ll miss it performances.

This is a big movie, a icy movie, a droll movie and an action movie. Directed by Tony Scott, one of the best (if not the best) action movie directors around, Legal Romance is the fable of Alabama (Arquette) and Clarence (Slater) young newlywed lovers on the race with a stolen suitcase fat of $5m worth of the mafia’s coke, which they intend to sell. But as the former saying goes, the path to factual worship never runs mild and a battle of wits ensues between Clarence, the police and the mob leading to a classic finale in this action packed film. As a whole, this movie works beautifully but on DVD it’s even better because you can access all your favourite classic scenes that unmistakeably bare Tarantino’s hallmark again and again. Such as the opening scene where the heterosexual Clarence (Slater) states that he’d sleep with Elvis if he were unruffled alive, or the showdown between Clarence and dreadlocked gangster (Oldman) . Or the showdown between the mob boss (Walken) and Clarence’s Dad (Hopper) . Classic scenes indeed, particularly the one with Walken and Hopper. It’s hard to have this movie was made help in 1993 because it’s tranquil as original, collected as wintry and calm looks as delectable as it was attend then. I objective worship this movie and if you haven’t seen it yet I hope you will too.

I really wish Brad Pitt would reflect reprising his role as the stoner Floyd someday cause he absolutely stole the show-he’s hysterical. The ‘deleted’ scenes aren’t worth talking about. Murky actually. And the alternate ending…..thank god they didn’t go with that one. If you don’t already maintain the DVD then this one is for you. If you are thinking about getting this one for the added negate you may want to consider twice. The extras objective aren’t worth it.

Look up the word `cool’ in any dictionary and it says “survey Cowboy Bebop”…well, not really…but it should, because Cowboy Bebop is the quintessence of coolness. A simple joke is the name of Zissou’s ship. The Belefonte is clearly a play on Cousteau’s Calypso as are the crew’s red knit caps. However, some of the humor is quite tough. All of the lead actors are terrific and Bill Murray leads the plan as the weary and fading Steve Zissou. Everyone eager with Zissou has their enjoy downward arc. Even the equipment is outmoded and barely works. Tired helicopters are perilous things.

Does the movie work? Maybe not. “The Life Aquatic” is a veritable beggar’s banquet for the eyes and the ears (a Brazilian troubadour sings David Bowie songs throughout the film to underscore the drama) and though you sometimes believe the whole ship is going to go over the edge artistically…it never does. Just wanted to let people know that in the widescreen edition, a mistake was made on the second and third discs–instead of using trusty widescreen footage, someone objective assign sunless bars on the top and bottom of the fullscreen pan-and-scan version, so you accept even *less* narrate with the widescreen version. 1/29/05 – Glad Birthday Annette. I objective received the 1/25/05 widescreen release of the BTTF trilogy release on 1/27/05, from Amazon/Borders, and I am very overjoyed. I have viewed all three movies and some of the special features. My state up is a 50 lunge widescreen TV and a 6.1 sound system. The sound and vision was apt. I was reluctant to pick the trilogy, due to past bad reviews of the widescreen version with errors on disc 2 and 3, with letterbox unlit bars on the top and bottom. I did not detect any fraction of scenes with less describe information or murky bars on any of the movies. The viewing hide was filled, in my view, perfectly. The 5.1 re-master sounds large and is utilized very well. In fact, I am able to force on my two rear surround speakers in conjunction with my side surround speakers and my decoder fills my room with sound. The most definite sound enact is within the last 15 minutes of disc one, where a helicopter sounds like it is circling the room from the true to rear to left. The viewer has the feeling of being in the center of the veil. Large Sound…….

The packaging on this fresh release has a cellophane wrapper indicating – All 3 movies! Lowest Sign Ever. Have it before time runs out! Widescreen. I checked the DVDs to try and decide if indeed these were updated versions. The second DVD does have the clear “V2″ (for version 2) on the face come the bottom, after all rights reserved. The third DVD does not have “V2″ on the bottom, as I was hoping. Thereafter, I placed the DVDs in my computer to check the contents date. Disc 1 (that never had any problems) had dates from 2002. Discs 2 and 3 had disclose dates from 2003. Fair to be obvious, I achieve the movie to the test and compared the famous spot scenes on the BTTF framing web place, and found disc three to be proper. So, I am ecstatic and acquire that I have updated versions of the widescreen DVDs.

NOTE: On a regular TV (Not Widescreen), there are the shaded letter box bars on the top and bottom of the cloak, but they are not visible on my widescreen TV.

Director and co-writer Bonnie Hunt delivers the goods in “Return To Me,” a touching sage of two deserving people who are afforded a second chance at fancy and happiness. When we meet Grace (Minnie Driver), she is suffering with heart disease and awaiting a donor for a transplant. Architect-builder Bob Rueland (David Duchovny) is happily married to Elizabeth (Joely Richardson), they are deeply in cherish, and Hunt rapidly establishes unbiased how perfect their lives are together; so perfect, in fact, it becomes somewhat unsettling because you know that tragedy of some kind or other is imminent. When it comes, the transition is handled succinctly and with the skill of a seasoned professional. When Elizabeth dies, Grace receives her heart. A year later, Bob, composed mourning the loss of his wife, meets Grace at the Irish-Italian restaurant owned by her grandfather (Carroll O’Connor), where she works as a waitress. Neither are aware of the intimate link they part to the heart that has given Grace her life. In the hands of a less savvy director, the epic at this point could easily go astray and become mired in coincidence and cliche. Hunt never comes conclude to allowing this to happen, however, and instead hits every label squarely on the head so that the state fairly resonates with precision and timing. A primitive character actress herself (she plays Grace’s closest friend, Meg, here), she seems to know instinctively objective when to add the just light touch to offset the drama, then fleshes it all out with an array of gigantic characters,especially Robert Loggia, as Angelo, the “Greatest Italian chef in Chicago,” and James Belushi as Meg’s husband, Joe. There are no wasted moments in this film; the narrative moves true along and takes you with it. The dialogue is often witty and always real; in a scene between Grace and Meg that takes space in the hospital (prior to their notification that a donor has been located), in which Grace can barely blueprint a breath, she looks up at Meg and says one word, “Rosebud.” After Elizabeth dies, when Bob finds himself alone at home and finally breaks down, Hunt gives the scene time to acquire and play out, so that it rings fair instead of being glossed over and simply feeble as a tool to fade the sage along. When it happens we, as an audience, are also afforded that time to realize the suffering he’s experiencing, and it allows us to feel it as well. The scene in which Grace, Meg and Joe are at home awaiting a dinner guest (a old-fashioned priest), is beyond hilarious. Highlighting an exceptional cast, David Duchovny and Minnie Driver are unforgettable as Bob and Grace; and the multi-talented Bonnie Hunt rises to a whole modern level of artistic merit for giving us a truly memorable and heart-warming movie that is a joy to experience. Written by Hunt and Don Lake, “Return To Me” is a delight from beginning to extinguish, the kind of film one waits for to approach along. Hopefully, in the future Hunt will treat us to even more movies of this caliber.

“Return To Me” is a very likeable romantic comedy starring David Duchovny, breaking away from X-Files mold, and the always interesting Minnie Driver. While we wait for kismet to bring these two characters together, we are treated to a splendid (and impressive) supporting cast of characters head by Carroll O’Connor, Robert Loggia, David Alan Grier, James Belushi, and writer-director Bonnie Hunt. There is petite suspense that the two main characters will acquire each other and in the extinguish obtain recent life and adore — but this is the movies after all!

For DVD buyers and renters, the good gem is the audio commentary by Bonnie Hunt and co-writer Don Lake. This highly recommended bonus to the DVD version is at least worth another “star.” Hunt, who is one of the best interviewees on talk shows, engages in a informative and a very funny dialogue with Lake throughout the movie. By all means, after watching the movie go befriend and search for the movie again with Hunt and Lake. Hunt’s dry humor will perform you laugh out loud at times as she speaks of her abominable make-up job in her first scene to the seemingly dozens of family members that she placed throughout the film. It is definitely one of the best audio-commentary tracks that I have heard to date and almost makes you even like the film more.

Ensconced in a decaying traditional hotel, seemingly rush by its slightly creepy and unctuous bell hop, Chet (Steve Buscemi), who bizarrely appears on the scene out of a trapdoor leisurely the hotel’s front desk, Fink begins his ordeal . The elevator is rush by a cadaverous, pock marked, elderly man. The corridors of the hotel seem endless. The wallpaper in Fink’s room is peeling away from the wall, leaving a viscous, damp ooze in its wake. His bed creaks and groans with a life of its contain. It is also hot, oppressively hot.

No residents of the hotel are apparent, except for the appearance of shoes outside the doors in expectation of the free shoe shine the hotel offers its denizens and for the noise made by his neighbors. Finks meets one of his neighbors, the portly Charlie Meadows (John Goodman), a gregarious Everyman, possessed of an abundance of bonhomie. A self-styled insurance salesman, Charlie cajoles Fink out of his shell, befriending him in the process. Slight does Fink know that beneath Charlie’s congenial exterior lies a horrific secret that will spillover onto him in the not so distant future.

At a luncheon with studio under boss, Ben Geisler (Tony Shalhoub), Fink meets a famed writer that he reveres, W. P. Mayhew (John Mahoney), a southern sot so steeped in drink that his companion/secretary, Audrey Taylor (Judy Davis), has to do his writing for him. Fink falls for Audrey but finds his overtures rebuffed. Calm, she is willing to try and back him overcome his profound writer’s block. In a classic Coen twist, it is this single act of kindness that acts as the catalyst for the nightmare that makes Fink’s life become a living hell on earth. He goes from living a life of self-imposed isolation and angst to one that appears to have been created by a Hollywood hack, filled as it is with the most extraordinary situations, a genuine studio head’s dream.

John Turturro is terrific as the introverted, tightly pain, pretentious, and neurotic Fink, who in Hollywood, away from the womb of the Broad White Procedure, is like a lamb led to the slaughter. With his sculpted afro, horn rimmed glasses, nerdy clothes, Fink is the stereotypic Hollywood plan of the commie writer. John Turturro makes the role his with a purposeful intensity.

John Goodman is sensational as the garrulous Charlie Meadow, the epitome of the working class man about whom Fink likes to write. Unfortunately, all is not as it seems, as Charlie has a dismal side to him, a very shaded side. John Mahoney is suited as the Faulknerian-like writer, and Judy Davis outdoes herself, as the self-sacrificing Audrey Taylor.

Michael Lerner will razzle-dazzle the viewer with his over the top portrayal of a quickly talking studio head who is willing to pay mountainous bucks for the cache of having a top Broadway playwright turn out screenplay swill for the masses. Jon Polito is very generous as the Uriah Heepish, quintessential yes man he portrays. Tony Shalhoub is great in his role, underscoring the absurdity of the outmoded Hollywood studio system.

Steve Buscemi, looking surprisingly petite in his bell hop uniform, resembles an organ grinder’s monkey, at times. The viewer may also query him to cry, “Call for Phillip Morris”, as in the former cigarette campaign, though he speaks in a controlled, respectful monotone, at all times. Level-headed, his very presence adds a slightly contaminated quality to the film, though he does nothing remotely faulty, other than the method he makes his conceal appearance. His entrance onto the conceal in this fashion foreshadows what is to reach.

This film is not for everyone, as it does not have a neatly wrapped ending. Instead, it goes beyond the standard expected ending into an absurdist foray. Mild, those who esteem films by the Coen Brothers will not be disappointed by this satiric gape at Hollywood. It is slight wonder that this film became the darling of the Cannes Film Festival.

For a long time, the absurdist masterpiece Barton Fink was only available in a dingy VHS release. It was better than nothing, but this film deserved better. Thankfully, it’s here – in all its stupefying glory.

I won’t relate the fable. Plenty of other reviews do that. Not long ago I was tempted to justify it. That composed seems a obedient course, as there is a capable sense that, beneath its comical, surreal surface, Barton Fink is trying to insist us something urgent and principal. Perhaps, but the primal forces in a writer’s mind as s/he shapes a spacious sage do that, anyway – often without the writer’s specific knowledge.

Rather than a simple allegory, Barton Fink is a collection of surfaces, styles, textures, and mannerisms. That they seem to add up to more than the sum of their parts is the gargantuan trick, akin to the arrangement a painter can suggest the dappled depths of a forest with a few deft pats of a fan brush. Which isn’t to say the film is shallow. No; there is a lot going on here. But to suggest that this film has a specific meaning is also to suggest it has an acknowledge. Only mediocre films (by the likes of, say, Stanley Kramer or Oliver Stone) provide answers in a attempt to form themselves more notable. The Coens (writer Ethan, director Joel), like most of us, haven’t a clue about the Mysteries of Life. So they don’t try to “…hiss us something about all of us, something glowing…” as Fink himself professes. Instead, they appreciate “…making things up…”, like the other writer in the film, the Faulkneresque W.P. Mayhew (played to perfection by John Mahoney) .

Somewhere in here, though, the sleight-of-hand, the postmodern flourishes (wherein genres clash and surfaces spill over one another in unexpected ways), cracks appear. Through them we peek something else…something truly gross.

Barton Fink’s resonances with the Holocaust are famous (the tainted and Fascistic German and Italian cops, the Jewish Fink, the burning hallway, the story’s year – 1941, the nice guy next door – also with a German name – who turns out to be a madman; on and on) . These touches cannot be accidental. Yet, the Coens seem to have deliberately avoided any certain throughline, any markers which would provide for a certain interpretation.

Perhaps this is the point – that there is no map to produce sense of the madness. Barton Fink, the character, is a writer who tries to celebrate the “accepted man” – to write about “actual life”. Yet, sincere life is incomprehensible to him. Nice Guy Charlie Meadows (the profitable John Goodman) is a crooked murderer. His idol is a raving drunk. His muse is a purveyor of formula hackery. The authorities are openly anti-semitic. And his bosses – Lipnick (Michael Lerner) and Geisler (Tony Shalhoub) – are utterly indifferent to his craft. The events that unfold around him are too horrifying and unique to perform sense of. Simply save, they cannot be explained by any rational interpretation. Which, if this film is really a parable of the Holocaust, is as it should be, since there is no rationale in genocide.

When it comes to “making things up”, no one does it better than the Coens. Their skill in marshalling symbols is sublime: Mayhew’s latest book is called “Nebuchadnezzar”; Lipnick, like king Nebuchadnezzar, has a dream he wants Fink to justify (the wrestling film he’s writing for Wallace Beery) . At a well-known point in the film, a dazed, sleepless Fink opens the Gideon bible to the page where Nebuchadnezzar threatens to nick the Chaldeans’ tents to a dung-heap if someone cannot justify his dream. He flips to Genesis, and there, on the page, is the opening of his screenplay – the only fragment of it he’s been able to write. It’s a intellectual sequence, that truly adds up. Lipnick is Nebuchadnezzar; Fink is trying to be Daniel. There is (literally) Hell to pay if he cannot do the job.

Beyond a few moments like these, though, trying to impose a specific meaning on Barton Fink is folly – like trying to impose a specific meaning on any of Luis Bunuel’s better films. There is something about it that, like Lynch’s best work, goes suitable past the rational self and nestles more deeply in the unconscious. I collect something from every viewing of this film, and piece of its beauty is that I cannot tell exactly what that is.

This DVD is nicely produced, with Roger Deakins’ pleasing cinematography looking better than ever, and Dolby Surround sound track well reproduced. A 5.1 re-mix would have been welcome, as would a serious commentary track, should the Coens ever be able to bring themselves around to doing one that doesn’t gallop fun of commentary tracks.

John Turturro is satisfactory as the title character. Judy Davis acquits herself nicely as Mayhew’s secretary/lover/ghost-writer.

This is one of those films that’s worth really thinking about, and watching again and again. Don’t seek information from answers; interrogate an experience – and a mighty one at that.

One of the greatest satires ever filmed and Chaplin’s most fully realized comedy. A resplendent blend of the usual Chaplin slapstick and pathos along with a very effective social and political commentary. Charlie is Adenoid Hynckle, dictator of an only slightly fictional country of Tomania. He also plays a Jewish ghetto barber. Both are played with such impeccable accuracy that to distinguish between them is extremely easy.Names are changed but this film is serene the most effective film of Nazi Germany and Hitler’s thankfully aborted attempt to win over the world. Chaplin’s script never gets too preachy at least without an equal dose of satire. His near is to earn people laugh while teaching them at the same time. Nowhere is this more apparent than in his final monologue. After a predictable improper identity episode, Chaplin as the unnamed Jewish barber speaks of the horrors of Nazism. This climazes what may be the greatest performance in the history of comedy films. The greatest because it does more than simply accomplish us laugh-it makes us believe. The film earned Chaplin well deserved Oscar nominations for Best Recount, Screenplay and Actor. This is a film you must eye.

When Chaplin began planning his next film in 1937, criticizing the rise of fascism in Europe and condemning the treatment of the Jewish people under Adolf Hitler were controversial ideas, although they would become more current by the time of the film’s eventual release in 1940. Chaplin stated in later years that he would not — could not — have joked about conditions in Germany had he known the tubby extent of the Holocaust. But this was an valuable film to be made. Maybe not all of the comedy is as successful as it could have been, but the movie’s heart is definitely in the factual position.

The film is divided roughly in half, with Chaplin playing the starring role in each segment (I’ve never understood the opening disclaimer stating that the resemblance of the dictator and the Jewish barber is entirely coincidental; the final fraction of the film depends precisely on their similarity) . The first role is the most sure, given Chaplin’s familiar mustache and general appearance. He plays Adenoid Hynkel, a very thinly veiled impersonation of Adolf Hitler. Chaplin’s motivation appears to obtain Hitler stare like a goofball — the target of ridicule. He falls down stairs, he flies into a rage when his office supplies don’t function correctly, and he plays a childish game of one-upmanship with his “brother dictator”, Benzino Napaloni of Bacteria. In one of the film’s most memorable sequences, he performs a dance with a globe of the Earth, happily gazing at all which he hopes to conquer. It’s a bizarrely extraordinary moment — comical, shocking and beautifully directed. And it surely can’t be by chance that in the first shot of the globe itself, the Western Hemisphere — the United States of America — is what is pointed at the camera.

The other section of the film is ultimately the most appealing, especially from a fresh day perspective. Chaplin’s tramp had always been the everyman — the slight guy up against the world. Surely there had not been a more beloved character in the history of film than the petite beggar with his ill-fitting costume. Gaining sympathy for his cause is simplicity itself; pick this adored tramp who has entertained millions and turn him into a Jewish barber living in central Europe. Seeing this fabulous and charming character thrown into the horrors of a ghetto in Germany during WWII is horrible. It’s almost inconceivable to imagine the fictional tramp existing in the same world as the horrors of Nazi Germany. In earlier films, we never really feared for the tramp’s safety; we always knew he’d figure some intention out of inconvenience. But here, he’s powerless. He must hasten away. He can’t simply kick the policeman in the butt and walk to victory. It’s a subtle but primary contrast from his other films. His adversaries until now had been easily defeated heavies. But now he’s up against something nasty and precise. He’s dragged across a street, beaten and almost hanged by stormtroopers. The word “Jew” is painted on the front of his shop. His home is burnt to the ground. He retains his humor, his hope and his will to fight, but he needs the world’s assist — which is one of the movie’s messages.

Chaplin’s final speech, where he breaks character and vehemently decries fascism, disfavor and bigotry, has been called overwrought and schmaltzy. I disagree. I gain goose bumps every time I hear it. As one of the interviewees on the DVD documentary states, “He said what had to be said.” It’s bewitching from a historical point of concept. There are plenty of propaganda films from WWII (which is what this basically is when you boil down to it), but how many of them appeal to basic human decency instead of blunt patriotism?

One of the DVD extras is a documentary, THE TRAMP AND THE DICTATOR, produced by Turner Classic Movies. This is actually really obedient. Showing footage from the movie next to newsreels of Hitler honest goes to explain how spot-on Chaplin’s impersonation was. Engaging is the inclusion of excerpts from one of the worst Nazi propaganda films (“The Eternal Jew” — a hateful share of appalling racism) which features Chaplin’s 1931 visit to Berlin and denouncing him in a series of racial epitaphs. The discussion as to the appropriateness of laughing about something bad as Hitler is touched on and the topic is first-rate of debate.

Also included is some recently discovered color footage shot on the residence of the film by Charlie’s brother, Sydney. It’s also included in its entirety as an extra, but it works better when excerpts are seen in the documentary. The footage by itself is relatively stupid for most of the time; the documentary uses the most enthralling material. On the other hand, I was amused by Sydney Chaplin’s focusing in on seemingly every woman prove during the filming of the ballroom dance scene.

The movie does have its ancient points. The WWI portions are more laughable than genuinely silly (though I’ve mellowed to the upside-down airplane gag the more times I’ve seen it) . And although Jack Oakie’s performance as a Mussolini-clone was inspired, one feels that the movie is biting off more than it can chew by including both dictators. As a result, some portions dealing with their relationship drags. So too does the whole Commander Schultz subplot. Additionally, a lot of the humor seems somewhat stuck between being peaceful and being talkie. But for all of the flaws, this is aloof an safe movie that I bask in it a limited more on each viewing. Perhaps not the best Chaplin film, but it definitely has something to say.

I’m not going to review the movie itself as it’s clearly been out long enough I’m impartial going to give a mercurial review for those provocative as to the bluray transfer. I picked up the disc yesterday and watched it last night. The quality of this bluray disc is comely! The clarity is top quality and the color vibrance is incredible, without looking spurious or hyped. I didn’t gawk any fresh artifacts like edge enhancement nor any noise reduction – I watched it on my 52″ Samsung LCD but didn’t collect upright up at the mask to query for these things. But from where I was sitting it looked flawless. The sound is also fanstic and what I noticed the most is that the movie doesn’t suffer from the irritating dramatic volume changes. Yes, during action scenes things fetch louder as they normally should but it wasn’t so worthy that I had to wobble the volume control, which is hugely irritating and becoming more accepted in today’s unique releases. If you unexcited don’t glean what I mean I’m referring to the dialog being noteworthy lower in volume to the tremendously loud action scenes. Anyhow, this disc doesn’t suffer from that, yet there is unruffled a splendid amount of bass to attach you into the feel of the action scenes.

The report quality was trustworthy, as well as the audio. This has always been one of my common sci-fi movies, Mosey or not. It is worth avoiding the DVD until you can retract up this version!
